Your Secret Weapon for a Faster Job Search: Networking Strategy

The biggest mistake many people make, especially when they need fast results in their job hunt, is to default reaching out to strangers or those they barely know. Instead, to truly make a quick and impactful career shift, you should be strategically leveraging your strongest, most established connections. This is precisely what the Core 15 framework is designed to help you accomplish. In this blog post, I share a networking strategy that will be your secret weapon to a faster job search.

Step 1: List Your Core 15

The foundation of this framework is identifying your “Core 15.” Start by meticulously listing 15 individuals you know exceptionally well, people you trust deeply, and who genuinely want to see you succeed. These aren’t just acquaintances; these are the individuals who would likely be willing to go out of their way, even a little bit, to help you achieve your goals.

Think broadly about your existing relationships: this list could include close friends, former colleagues or managers from previous roles, trusted mentors who have guided your career, or even family members who have strong professional networks in relevant fields. The key is genuine connection and mutual trust.

Step 2: Score Their Potential Help

Once you have your Core 15 list compiled, the next strategic move is to quickly assess and score their potential to help you. For each person on your list, give them a score from 1 to 5 for three key areas. This isn’t about judging them; it’s about being strategic with your outreach and understanding where their strengths lie in supporting your job search.

  • Connect (1-5): How likely are they to introduce you to relevant people within your target industry or specific role? A higher score means they have a strong network and are proactive about making introductions.
  • Advocate (1-5): How well can this person speak positively and credibly about your skills, your work ethic, your accomplishments, or your overall potential to others who are in a hiring position? A higher score here means they can truly vouch for you.
  • Inform (1-5): How much valuable industry insight, specific hiring news, or direct job openings might they realistically be able to share with you? This includes understanding market trends, company culture, or specific opportunities before they’re widely advertised.

Step 3: Prioritize & Reach Out Strategically

With your scores in hand, you now have a powerful, prioritized list. Contact those with the highest overall scores first. These are your most likely advocates and connectors. When you reach out, be direct and crystal clear about your current career goals.

Explain exactly what kind of role you’re exploring, the industry you’re targeting, and, most importantly, be specific about how they might genuinely be able to help you. Instead of a vague “Do you know of any jobs?”, try: “I’m looking for a Senior Product Manager role in the FinTech space, and I was hoping you might be able to offer insights into companies you know, or perhaps introduce me to someone in your network who works in that area.” This makes it easy for them to assist you.

Step 4: Offer Value & Follow Up

Remember, effective networking is always a two-way street. Before or during your outreach, proactively think about how you can offer value to them in return. This doesn’t have to be a grand gesture. Can you connect them with someone in your network? Perhaps you recently read an insightful article relevant to their work that you could share? Or maybe you have a unique insight into an industry challenge they’re facing? Offering value demonstrates generosity and builds goodwill.

Always, always make sure to genuinely thank them for their time, their assistance, and any introductions they make. Crucially, keep them updated on your progress, even if it’s just a quick note to say, “Thanks again for connecting me with X; we had a great chat, and I learned a lot!” Maintaining these valuable relationships is fundamental for not just your current job search, but for long-term career success and building a robust professional network.
