Going from Pet to Threat: How to Reclaim Your Power at Work

Have you ever felt like you were truly thriving at work, perhaps even cherished, only to suddenly find yourself sidelined, intensely scrutinized, or worse? It’s like the entire vibe shifted, and you went from being the ‘pet’ to the ‘threat’. This experience is far more common than many realize, especially for Black women in corporate spaces. In this post, I’m going to explain exactly what “Pet to Threat” means, why this unsettling phenomenon occurs, and most importantly, three crucial things you can do to reclaim your power and thrive, no matter the professional environment.

Let me share my client’s story with you. She desperately wanted to escape a toxic workplace. The unsettling part? Her workplace wasn’t always like that. Imagine being trapped in an environment where you’re constantly being gaslit, where the stress is so immense it severely impacts your mental health, even causing physical symptoms. My client faced this exact reality; she was remarkably overqualified, yet felt completely undervalued, and utterly lost about her career path. This unfortunate experience is a reality many Black women encounter, where a professional situation that was initially welcoming and accepting can slowly transform into something deeply harmful and disempowering.

What “Pet to Threat” Means

The “Pet to Threat” journey, a concept by Dr. Kecia Thomas, describes a pattern many Black women face professionally. It often starts when a Black woman is embraced, seen as an “exception” or “pet”—valued but not a perceived rival. However, as her competence and influence grow, she becomes a “threat” to established power. This can trigger exclusion, microaggressions, gaslighting, or sabotage designed to push her out. The workplace turns toxic, not due to poor performance, but because her rising power is seen as dangerous.

What To Do If You’re In This Situation

If you find yourself navigating a “Pet to Threat” situation, know that it can feel incredibly isolating, deeply frustrating, and profoundly unfair. But it’s vital to remember: you are not powerless. Here are three critical strategies you can implement to reclaim your agency and protect your well-being:

1. Build Your Support System Outside of Work

It’s crucial not to rely solely on your current job for support or validation. A key strategy is to proactively find people who can advise and genuinely help you from outside your immediate workplace. Start making these vital connections long before you desperately need them. Look for mentors who can offer wise counsel and guidance, but also actively seek sponsors or champions, these are powerful individuals who will go a step further, speaking up for you in rooms you’re not in and actively helping you discover and secure new opportunities. Think of them as your career insurance; they ensure you always have options and perspectives beyond your current challenges.

2. Keep a Strong Record of Your Achievements

This might seem like extra administrative work, but it is absolutely essential and serves as your professional shield. Make it a regular, non-negotiable habit to meticulously write down all your achievements, any awards you receive, and any positive feedback you get. Aim to do this every week or at the very least, once a month. This written record isn’t just for your resume; it becomes your primary way to show your value and impact. It helps you powerfully push back against any negative narratives, undermining comments, or self-doubt that tries to lessen what you’ve legitimately done. If things become challenging or contentious at work, having clear, documented proof of your performance and worth is your strongest, most tangible defense.

3. Take Care of Your Mental and Emotional Health

Dealing with difficult and toxic work situations can be incredibly draining, often in ways you don’t realize until later. Do not underestimate how profoundly this can affect your overall well-being. Make sure you regularly dedicate time and energy to activities that genuinely help your mental and emotional health. Invest in things that truly help you grow stronger, heal, and recharge. Protecting your inner peace is key as it gives you the sustained energy and clarity you need to keep pursuing your goals and succeed, regardless of the external challenges you face.

My Client’s Transformation Story

The transformation for my client was profound. In just three months, she rebuilt her confidence, reclaimed her career, and landed a promotion in a new department. She now thrives in a healthy workplace where her value is truly appreciated. Her story shows what’s possible when you invest in yourself and take decisive action. She chose to stop settling, powerfully moving beyond the “Pet to Threat” dynamic to create her own successful path.
