Networking as an introvert is easy. If you are introverted like me, you may often get a bit anxious when it comes to things like happy hours, mixers, and different networking events. After all, mingling with large groups of people is not typically a favorite activity for us. However, I’ve learned over time to not only become more comfortable navigating the world of networking as an introvert but also to appreciate opportunities to interact and build connections. If you are hoping to do the same, allow me to share some tips that will help you with networking with ease as an introvert. 

Do More Networking Online

Many people love networking in person. They thrive on spontaneous conversations and meeting people, whether they be at crowded bars or loud network events. For me, I’ve learned that this simply isn’t my jam. Instead, I prefer settings that I have a bit more control over. Thus, networking online has been a great way to approach networking as an introvert with success. 

While there are many ways to network with others online, I have had a lot of success on social media, particularly LinkedIn. It allows me to connect with others in a setting where I can build relationships and exchange knowledge without all the unnecessary excitement. For me, this is both gratifying and effective. If you want to network in a more subdued setting, I highly recommend this route.

Networking As An Introvert – Suggest 1:1 Engagements

Networking events are typically very efficient because they allow large numbers of people to get together in a relatively small timeframe. This can enhance the likelihood of making more connections. However, for many introverts like me, the goal is not necessarily the quantity of connections but rather the quality of connections. 

Thus, a great strategy for introverts to network is to propose 1:1 engagements. For example, you could suggest getting coffee or tea (although I don’t do coffee myself). This provides a relaxed setting to chat and build a relationship. Other great ideas include things like video chats or really any setting that isn’t loud and hectic.

Listen More & Talk Less

This isn’t necessarily something that will need a lot of convincing for many introverts. In fact, if your introversion functions like mine, you already enjoy listening. After all, it is a skill that many of us are very good at. Fortunately, this tends to lend itself quite well to helping with networking. Most people enjoy speaking about themselves, and an active listener can quickly build a strong relationship with such a person. 

Allowing others to talk more while you listen is a great way to build some bridges. It can also greatly help ensure that you are comfortable in a particular interaction. Practice common active listening skills and feel free to ask questions. These are great ways not only to network but also to learn impactful things from the people you network with. Plus, as you get to know someone more, your comfort level will likely increase.

Bring a Friend

While there are many ways that introverts can engage in networking outside of the scope of large events, the reality is that sometimes you just may find yourself at such an event. While it may not be your ideal situation, there are ways that you can make it a bit more bearable. One of the most useful is to bring a friend along. 

Oftentimes, you’ll have a friend who is a colleague in the same industry. Bringing them along can give you someone to chat with and help calm your nerves. It can also help your friend to improve their networking as well. One of the great things about bringing a friend is that networking is often easier in small groups rather than approaching someone one-on-one.
